I’ve already talked about how I absolutely . Sure, I don’t love every part of it (folding sheets can be really hard, especially when you’re alone), but I just love the feeling that all of my clothes/towels/sheets are clean, and nothing can ruin that for me.

I’ve already talked about how I absolutely love doing laundry. Sure, I don’t love every part of it (folding sheets can be really hard, especially when you’re alone), but I just love the feeling that all of my clothes/towels/sheets are clean, and nothing can ruin that for me.

I think one of the difficulties about doing laundry is simply when to do it. I know too many people who wait until they absolutely have to do laundry – as in they have no clothing left in their closet – and thus have a negative perception about the process. But what if you did laundry a little more often? Think about it for a second: If you had a rough schedule that you followed week to week, you’d always get to wear your favorite black jeans when you want to, and your towels would be freshly clean without fail. Sounds good, right? So let’s talk scheduling!

While everyone is naturally going to have a different schedule, I thought I’d share my laundry schedule that I try to follow from week to week. Of course, sometimes things come up and it shifts, but the overall principles stay the same.

Sheets/Towels: I have two sets of sheets and about four sets of towels. While this means I could technically put my dirty sheets in the hamper and replace them with fresh ones, and similarly do this for towels x 4, I don’t opt for this strategy. All this means is that your hamper is going to fill up very quickly and once my second set of sheets is dirty, I then have two loads to do, which means double the laundry time. Rather, I change my sheets every week and wash them as I’m putting on the second set. Towels are a little different; I swap out my towel halfway through the week and wash both of them at the end of the week. Both of these wash cycles generally occur on Sundays and require two loads.

Clothing: Clothing is a bit more variable and I typically wait until I have enough to fill the washing machine before doing laundry. Since I dry clean or hand wash much of what I wear during the work week, it often takes me about a week and a half to two weeks to really build up enough laundry to warrant doing a load. The most important factor here is separating your clothes into lights and darks. Never, never, never wash darks with whites unless you want your whites to no longer be white. Another important factor is that even if I don’t have enough to fill a full load, I will still do laundry at the two-week mark because clothes sitting that long in a hamper will wrinkle and start to smell.

Undergarments: These are washed with clothing though I put mine in a mesh bag, much like this one. Using one of these ensures that my lace undergarments don’t get ripped/ruined (ladies, you feel me?).

Things like comforters, mattress pads, living room blankets, etc.: I wash these types of items much less frequently. I tend to wash my comforter and mattress pad about twice a year, once in the Summer and once in the late Winter. Living room blankets will get washed a bit more frequently – about once every other month – but you don’t want to wash them too often that they get ruined!

Dry Cleaning: I generally take the items I wore that week in on the weekend so I make one trip instead of many small ones throughout the week.

So there you have it! There’s a laundry schedule that you can try to follow in the coming weeks and see whether it makes your life easier by not having to do 10 loads in one weekend when you realize everything you own is dirty.
