Tricks of the Trade: Hang v. Fold

To hang or not to hang—that is the question. If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a pile of clothes uncertain about which items should be hung or folded, then this post is for you.

Unless you have unlimited space in your closet, you’re likely going to need to make choices about which items can hang up on the rods v. which ones should be stowed away in dresser drawers. Here are the rules that I abide by when determining what should be hung v. what should be folded:

Hang anything that will wrinkle if folded. In my closet, and for my clients, this typically looks like:

  • Silks, linens, and satins
  • Nice blouses, such as button-downs
  • Dresses
  • Skirts
  • Jackets

On the other hand, you should fold heavier items that a hanger would stretch and morph. The items that typically fall within this category are:

  • Clothes made of cotton, as they are not delicate enough to warrant being hung. This can include pajamas, athletic clothes, and t-shirts.
  • Sweaters

So now you might be wondering, what about jeans? They can really go either way depending on how much closet space you have in any one area. For more on denim organization, check out this post.
